Split tunneling
With split tunneling only the applications you choose go through the VPN; the rest of the computer stays on its own network.
Adding an application
The Applications: split tunneling card on the VPN page offers three ways:
- Choose an application: the list of installed applications; running ones are at the top and marked.
- Choose a program file: point to the file to run.
- Type a command: for example
psql -h db.internal.
Launch next to an application in the list opens it so that it goes through the VPN. If the VPN is down, it connects first.
quickssh run acme -- curl -s http://intranet.acme.local/
quickssh run acme -- google-chrome
How applications are routed
| Application | Method |
|---|---|
| Chrome, Edge, Brave and other Chromium-based browsers | The browser's own proxy setting, in a separate profile |
| Firefox and its derivatives | The browser's own proxy setting, in a separate profile |
| Other programs | Proxy environment variables (ALL_PROXY, HTTPS_PROXY…), if the program honors them |
Other programs, with proxychains4 installed (Linux) | All TCP connections go through the proxy |
Limits
- A window that is already running can't be moved into the VPN afterwards. A new instance of the application that goes through the VPN is opened.
- Programs that ignore the proxy variables don't go through the VPN. On Linux, installing
proxychains4solves most of them. - The application list is stored on the computer you are using; program paths are specific to the machine.
